Hot Dog on a Stick Eyes Major U.S. Franchise Expansion Plans
Hot Dog on a Stick enters a new growth era as Amazing Brands plans franchise expansion, new store formats, mall sites and wider U.S. development.
Hot Dog on a Stick Targets Major Franchise Growth Under New Owner
Hot Dog on a Stick is entering a new chapter with ambitious expansion plans under its new owner, Amazing Brands.
The Las Vegas-based restaurant group acquired the long-running quick-service concept from FAT Brands for $8 million following a bankruptcy process. Now, Amazing Brands CEO Stephen Siegel sees an opportunity to take a familiar West Coast name and build it into a much larger franchise system.
The vision is aggressive. Siegel wants Hot Dog on a Stick to eventually reach as many as 1,000 locations over the next five years.
While future growth will move well beyond traditional food courts, the company is not planning to walk away from the malls that helped make the brand famous.
Hot Dog on a Stick Begins a New Growth Chapter
Hot Dog on a Stick has been around since 1946, when its first location opened near Muscle Beach in Santa Monica, California.
Over the decades, the concept became closely associated with shopping malls. Its simple menu, colorful employee uniforms and freshly prepared corn dogs helped it stand out in crowded food courts.
At its peak, the company operated more than 100 locations.
The brand later struggled as shopping habits changed and mall traffic declined in many parts of the country. Its store count fell significantly, but Hot Dog on a Stick maintained a loyal following, particularly in Western markets.
Amazing Brands believes that history gives the concept something many newer restaurant franchises spend years trying to develop: strong consumer recognition.
Instead of rebuilding the brand from the ground up, the new ownership group plans to strengthen the existing business and prepare it for a new period of expansion.
Amazing Brands Sees Strong Franchise Potential
Siegel believes one of Hot Dog on a Stick's biggest advantages is its ability to operate in relatively simple restaurant environments.
The menu centers around recognizable products such as hand-dipped corn dogs, Cheese on a Stick, fries and freshly prepared lemonade.
That simplicity could help Amazing Brands introduce the concept into more markets without requiring the larger footprint associated with many restaurant brands.
Before accelerating expansion, however, the company intends to strengthen operations, restaurant design, marketing and the overall franchise platform.
Building a stronger operating system will be important if Hot Dog on a Stick is going to support the level of franchise growth Amazing Brands has in mind.
The company expects future expansion to include both franchised and company-owned restaurants.
Mall Locations Will Remain Part of the Strategy
Although Hot Dog on a Stick is looking beyond shopping centers, malls are not disappearing from the company's real estate plans.
The brand built much of its identity inside mall food courts, and strong shopping centers can still generate substantial customer traffic.
Rather than abandoning that history, Amazing Brands appears focused on becoming more selective about where mall locations make sense.
High-performing malls, outlet centers and entertainment-oriented shopping destinations could continue to provide opportunities for the brand, particularly when the restaurant can benefit from steady pedestrian traffic.
The difference going forward is that Hot Dog on a Stick will no longer depend almost entirely on one type of real estate.
Drive-Thrus and Street Locations Could Fuel Expansion
Amazing Brands wants to place Hot Dog on a Stick in a much wider range of locations.
Future development could include standalone restaurants, street-front stores and drive-thru locations.
The company is also considering airports, stadiums, amusement parks, tourist destinations, entertainment districts and resort markets.
Las Vegas is expected to play an important role in the strategy.
Amazing Brands has discussed evaluating a flagship restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip while also looking for additional opportunities throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
A high-profile Las Vegas location could introduce Hot Dog on a Stick to millions of visitors while helping the company demonstrate how the concept works outside its traditional mall setting.
Modernizing an 80-Year-Old Restaurant Brand
Expansion is only one part of the plan.
Amazing Brands also intends to improve the guest experience, strengthen marketing, update restaurant designs and introduce carefully selected menu innovation.
The challenge will be modernizing the business without removing the characteristics that longtime customers associate with Hot Dog on a Stick.
That includes the brand's signature striped uniforms, hand-dipped products and fresh lemonade.
Siegel has a personal connection to the company as well. He grew up with the brand, while his wife previously managed a Hot Dog on a Stick restaurant in California.
That familiarity is influencing the turnaround strategy. Rather than completely reinventing the concept, Amazing Brands wants to build on what customers already recognize.
Hot Dog on a Stick Could Expand Beyond Restaurants
The company is also looking at opportunities outside traditional restaurant sales.
Amazing Brands plans to explore consumer packaged goods, potentially bringing Hot Dog on a Stick products such as its lemonade into grocery and retail channels.
That could give the company another way to increase national awareness as it enters markets where the restaurant brand currently has little or no presence.
For prospective franchisees, the larger strategy could eventually create opportunities across several types of real estate rather than limiting development to mall food courts.
Hot Dog on a Stick has spent eight decades building its name. Amazing Brands now believes the next phase could be much larger than the last.
If the company can strengthen operations while protecting the nostalgia that makes the concept recognizable, Hot Dog on a Stick could find new growth both inside the mall and far beyond it.
