Description
When you talk about Indian Mughlai and North Indian cuisine, you are essentially talking about the legacy created by Moti Mahal. Founded in the early 20th century by the legendary culinary visionary Shri Kundan Lal Gujral, Moti Mahal is not just a brand name; it is the very institution that introduced the world to the smoky richness of the traditional clay tandoor. It is the undisputed birthplace of global culinary icons like Tandoori Chicken, Butter Chicken, and Dal Makhani.
What began as a single, passionate endeavor in Peshawar soon traveled to the heart of post-independence Delhi in Daryaganj. Over the decades, it transformed into a legendary culinary destination. From hosting global dignitaries, world leaders, and celebrities—including尊者 Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and former US President Richard Nixon—to feeding generations of food enthusiasts, Moti Mahal has defined premium Indian hospitality.
Today, operating under dynamic corporate leadership, the Moti Mahal Group has adapted its rich heritage into a highly scalable, modern franchise ecosystem. In India's fast-evolving food and beverage industry, Moti Mahal stands out as a fortress of brand equity. It masterfully bridges the gap between old-world culinary authenticity and modern, high-revenue restaurant management. By transitioning from a family-run eatery to a premium casual dining and express-kiosk franchise system, Moti Mahal offers entrepreneurs an unrivaled market positioning: instant consumer trust, an iconic menu, and a proven roadmap to commercial profitability.
Background
Company Overview & History
The story of Moti Mahal is interwoven with the modern history of India itself. Founded in 1920 in undivided India (Peshawar) by Shri Kundan Lal Gujral, the brand revolutionized cooking by digging a traditional tandoor right into the middle of an eatery. Following the partition in 1947, Gujral migrated to Delhi as a refugee, starting afresh with a small roadside dhaba in Daryaganj.
It was here that his culinary genius truly shone. To prevent his famous tandoori chicken pieces from drying out, he combined them with a rich, velvety gravy made of fresh tomatoes, cream, and butter—unwittingly inventing Butter Chicken.
Modern Leadership & Evolution
The brand has reached historic heights under the modern leadership of current Chairman and CEO, Mr. Ashim Gujral (grandson of the founder), and the next generation, including Mr. Kuvam Gujral. An alumnus of the prestigious Pusa Institute of Hotel Management, Ashim Gujral transitioned the brand from a localized landmark into a global powerhouse.
