Farmer Boys Franchise Growth Fueled by Multi-Unit Operators

Experienced Franchisees Drive Expansion Across Arizona and California

Farmer Boys is expanding its restaurant footprint with help from experienced multi-unit franchise operators who are continuing to invest in the fast-casual brand.

Recent restaurant openings in Arizona and California demonstrate an important part of the company’s growth strategy: building new markets with franchisees who already understand the Farmer Boys operating model.

The Southern California-born restaurant concept has grown to more than 100 locations across California, Arizona and Nevada. As Farmer Boys looks toward additional expansion, veteran operators are playing an increasingly important role in bringing the brand into new communities.

Farmer Boys Expands Its Arizona Footprint

Arizona has become an important development market for Farmer Boys.

Longtime franchise operator Omar Mawas has been a significant contributor to that expansion. Mawas opened his first Farmer Boys restaurant in California in 2007 before eventually helping introduce the concept to Arizona.

His first Arizona restaurant opened in Gilbert in 2021. Since then, the brand has continued building its presence across the state.

Mawas added another location in Mesa in August, helping bring Farmer Boys to six restaurants in Arizona. His overall portfolio now includes nine operating Farmer Boys restaurants, with four additional locations in development.

His restaurants span multiple markets, including Arizona, Los Angeles and San Diego.

For Farmer Boys, the continued expansion by an existing franchisee provides more than additional restaurant count. Experienced operators already understand the brand's menu, service expectations, restaurant operations and customer experience, potentially making them valuable partners when entering or developing newer territories.

California Franchisee Opens Fourth Farmer Boys Restaurant

Farmer Boys is also strengthening its position in its home state.

Veteran restaurant operator Dilip Bhavnani expanded his Farmer Boys portfolio with a new Cathedral City restaurant that opened in April.

Bhavnani has more than three decades of restaurant industry experience and joined Farmer Boys in 2003 when he opened his first location in Pomona. He also operates restaurants in Chino and Huntington Beach.

The Cathedral City restaurant became his fourth Farmer Boys location.

The opening is particularly notable for the brand because it represents the first new Farmer Boys restaurant in the Coachella Valley in more than 20 years.

Farmer Boys sees additional growth potential in the region and is evaluating opportunities to expand its presence further.

Multi-Unit Franchisees Become a Key Part of Expansion

Growth from existing franchisees can be an important indicator for restaurant franchise systems.

Rather than relying entirely on first-time operators to enter new markets, brands can work with established franchise partners who already have experience executing the business model.

For Farmer Boys, both Mawas and Bhavnani represent that approach.

Their continued development illustrates how experienced franchisees can expand from individual restaurants into larger portfolios while helping the franchisor enter new communities.

The strategy also aligns with Farmer Boys' broader interest in attracting multi-unit restaurant operators capable of developing several locations.

A Restaurant Brand Built Around Fresh, Made-to-Order Food

Farmer Boys traces its roots to a family with direct experience in both farming and restaurants.

The founding brothers grew up on a family farm in Cyprus, where they worked with crops while also gaining experience in their family's restaurant business.

After moving to the United States, the brothers purchased a restaurant in Torrance, California, in 1979. They went on to establish the first Farmer Boys restaurant in Perris in 1981.

That agricultural background became part of the identity behind the Farmer Boys name and helped shape the brand's emphasis on fresh ingredients.

Today, the menu includes burgers, salads, breakfast dishes and signature sides. The concept emphasizes cooked-to-order meals and ingredients prepared fresh, including never-frozen beef, produce delivered regularly and cage-free eggs used for its all-day breakfast offerings.

Customers can access the brand through dine-in, drive-thru and digital ordering channels.

More Than Four Decades of Restaurant Operations

Farmer Boys has now spent more than four decades developing its restaurant concept.

While the industry has changed considerably during that period, the company has maintained its positioning around freshness, substantial portions and made-to-order meals.

The brand has also earned recognition across several restaurant categories, including breakfast, fries and regional fast food.

That established operating history can be particularly relevant as Farmer Boys competes for experienced franchisees in a crowded restaurant franchise market.

Multi-unit operators often evaluate concepts based not only on consumer demand but also on operational infrastructure, unit economics, market availability and the ability to scale across multiple locations.

Farmer Boys Looks Toward Its Next Stage of Franchise Growth

The latest openings in Mesa and Cathedral City illustrate two different components of the Farmer Boys franchise expansion strategy.

In Arizona, an experienced franchisee is helping establish and scale the brand in a relatively newer market.

In California, another longtime operator is extending Farmer Boys into a region where the company sees renewed development potential.

Both developments share one important characteristic: existing franchisees are choosing to expand their relationship with the brand.

As Farmer Boys pursues additional restaurant development, experienced multi-unit franchise operators could remain central to its growth strategy.

With more than 100 restaurants already operating across three Western states, the next phase for Farmer Boys will depend on identifying attractive markets, securing strong restaurant sites and partnering with operators capable of developing the brand at scale.
